Look for Stain Resistant Carpet
Carpets never advertise as “easy staining” or “impossible to clean”. Any carpet you find on the market today will likely be reasonably good at letting go of stains. But that’s not enough in a pet house. Ask how and why this carpet is stain resistant. Is the material naturally that way? Is there a coating, treatment, or design feature that makes it stain resistant? Which part or parts of the carpet release stains easily- the warp (backbone of the carpet), weft (yarn), the pile (how the yarn is knotted)? The more stain resistant, the less damage can be done by your pet.
To Loop or Not to Loop?
Carpets can feature loops or cut yarn. There are also carpets that mix the two. When you have a cat who sharpens their claws or a dog who’s nails can snag (basically any dog), you may want to avoid looped carpets. When a loop gets pulled out there isn’t an easy graceful solution. A professional has to come fix it for you, or you can leave a long out of place yarn attached to your otherwise short organized carpet. Cutting the pulled yarn is technically an option, but it prohibits repair and creates a permanent eye sore. Cut yarn carpets are a pet owner’s friend.
Dimensional color
Small flecks of color or multicolored strands in carpets are able to lessen the visual impact of tracked-in dirt or hair fluffs until you can get around to cleaning. This helps the floor look clean even though the dog has gone outside twice since you vacuumed. Even stain resistant carpet will serve you best if it makes messes less obvious until you get to them.
Another color consideration is the main color of your carpet. When pet stains occur, they invariably have to do with things in the warm color messes: yellow, brown, red. Whether we’re talking about potty accidents, pet food (previously eaten or not) or chew toy coloring, they tend to be warm colored. So choosing a pet resistant carpet that won’t show warm stains easily can be to your advantage. Consider beige, tan, buttercup yellow, terra cotta, a warm leather hue, rose, eggshell, and other warm colors. You may want to stay away from cool blues, greens, purples and greys.
