How to Choose Home Flooring

In this day and age, we have a multitude of home flooring options to choose from. While this is undoubtedly a good thing, it does mean that the sheer number of choices can seem overwhelming.

If you’re feeling indecisive, look no further. We’ve compiled all of the information you need to confidently choose the flooring that’s right for your home.

List of Contents

Hardwood Home Flooring

Hardwood is one of the most enduring home flooring options. Remarkably, people have been using hardwood floors in their homes for hundreds of years, and it’s not difficult to see why. It adds durability, beauty, and a classic look to any space. It’s non-toxic, and original hardwood flooring can last the entire lifetime of a home.

However, because it’s a natural material, it comes at a higher price per foot and is more susceptible to scuffing, and temperature fluctuations. Hardwood is suitable for bedrooms, offices, and kitchens. It’s not recommended for moisture-prone areas of the home like the bathroom.

Carpet

Carpet is a versatile option that comes in a range of materials. Also, it can be customized for any style, color palette, or budget. Natural fibers are often more expensive, and wool carpets are the highest price point. Synthetic fibers are durable and a more budget-friendly home flooring option. Another benefit of synthetic carpeting is that it can be treated for stain-resistance, making it a good option for homes with pets or children.

Carpets require maintenance and should be cleaned periodically to preserve and restore color and texture. It also offers noise-reduction and extra insulation, as well as a soft feel underfoot.

Laminate

Laminate is a newer home flooring option. Crafted with a core of wood composite, and bonded with resin, laminate is a very versatile option. Imprinted patterns mimic the appearance of hardwood, ceramic, or even stone.

Because of its resin construction, laminate is a durable option that withstands high traffic. It’s quality on any budget. This option is suitable for all areas of the home, but because of its wooden core, it’s not waterproof and warps under pooling water. Damage generally means replacement, not repair.

Luxury Vinyl

Luxury vinyl is great for home flooring. It offers all the benefits of a laminate. Thicker luxury vinyl can be imprinted with realistic wood grains, or other details, to emulate natural materials. Unlike laminate, luxury vinyl is composed without wood and is completely waterproof, making it suitable for any area of the home. It’s a great choice for moisture-prone areas, like kitchens and bathrooms.

Tile

Tile is a classic choice for bathrooms and beyond. For a unique look, use tile in bedrooms, hallways, and kitchens. This natural home flooring material is often composed of porcelain, stone, or ceramics. It offers a high-end look, plus it’s durable and ages well. Additionally, tile comes in all shapes, colors, sizes, and finishes. Because it’s naturally waterproof, tile is a popular choice. One downside, however, is that dropped items can cause it to chip or crack.

Your Home Flooring

The wide range of available flooring options means you can mix and match. Why not try different materials throughout your home? The right flooring will increase the value and quality of your property, and also enhance the enjoyment of your space. Connect our flooring professionals to select the best for your home!
