When creating the home of your dreams, there are seemingly unlimited options for walls: simple paint, murals, tile, wainscoting, stripes and floral wallpapers. Are you aware that wood wall planks are also an option?
If you want to add warmth, texture, and a call to natural beauty, wood wall planks are a great idea for your home! A feature wall of wood planks is a subtle and beautiful choice. In some homes an entire room with wood wall planks brings a rustic, cabin-like feel that’s hard to create otherwise.
What Looks Do Wood Wall Planks Work Best With?
There are many different styles of planks available for walls. There are whitewashed styles, knotted burley looking woods, smooth bright light wood grains, and dark striated textures. Some look clean and minimalist, while others bring woodsy variation and simple charm.
Several styles compliment wood wall planks: nautical or coastal decor themes, classic library or study aesthetics, modern minimalist, cottage chic, and more. Finding decor that’s enriched by the look of a wood wall is easy. It’s actually much harder to find a home style that that doesn’t look good with a wood plank wall.
What About Wood Planks With Wood or Wood-look Flooring?
Some homeowners express fear that wood wall planks will either clash with or become overwhelming in concert with their existing wood flooring. Although that’s possible, it’s also very easily avoided. To have a great looking wood feature wall with wood floors, follow these tips:
- If matching the flooring exactly or very nearly, don’t opt for the largest wall in the room. Choose a small wall, the side of a stairwell, or a wall that’s mostly windows or cabinets.
- If the wall and floor planks aren’t near matches, make sure the lighter wood is on the wall, and the darker one is on the floor for small spaces.
- In large spaces and spaces with higher ceilings you can experiment with darker planks compared to the wood color on the floor. It’s probably best to limit dark wood to an accent wall instead of a whole room.
