Wool Carpets and Rugs: Qualities and Care

Wool Carpets and Rugs: Qualities and Care

Why do people choose wool? Carpets and rugs made from wool come in a wide variety of styles and shapes and they provide some very unique characteristics. Wool has been used for centuries and it has been the first material choice of rug makers throughout the years. Wool rugs and carpets are both natural and enduring, bringing the best of both worlds.

Following are some key benefits of wool rugs and carpets:

List of Contents

Damage Resistant

As compared to nylon, wool fiber is naturally resilient. Because of this quality, wool rugs don’t get crushed or matt like nylon and synthetic rugs do.

Hard to Stain

Wool carpets are resistant to stain because of the presence of natural oils including Cholesterin and Lanolin in the fleece. Apart from this, they are also water and fire resistant and most importantly, they can naturally withstand dust mites.

Easy to Clean

Wool fiber consists of scales that are arranged in upward fashion and overlap each other like roof shingles. Because of this certain arrangement of fiber, dirt particles remain near the surface and the carpet is easy to clean via a vacuum cleaner.

Longer Life

If handled with care, wool rugs can last up to fifty years. They do not slip over the floors and get crushed like synthetic carpets that you have to fix to the ground via the latex covering.

Thermal Insulation

Thanks to their thermal insulating properties, wool rugs and carpets maintain warmth in the room.

Eco-Friendly

Wool rugs are very eco-friendly as compared to rugs made from other fabrics. Wool is bio-degradable and causes no destruction to environment.   With these unique qualities and many others, wool rugs and carpets should be your first choice.

Wool Carpet Care and Maintenance

There are some useful tips that you can follow in order to keep your wool rugs as luxurious and beautiful as the day you purchased them. Certain areas of wool carpets receive a lot of abuse from everyday dust or dirt, sand, and foot traffic.

Vacuum Them Often

It is recommended that you vacuum your wool rug often as it is the most effective way of keeping this natural fiber looking new. Experts recommend that you vacuum at least three times a week. It’s the easiest and the quickest way to combat day to day abuse.

Spot Clean When Needed

Spot cleaning your wool rug or carpet when spills occur is a very effective method of preserving its appearance. When attempting to clean a spill or a spot, it is recommended that you first blot to get up as much of the spill as possible. You should use a mild cleaning agent for most spots.

Have Them Professionally Cleaned Once in a Year

Wool rugs need to be professionally cleaned once every 12-18 months. You should never steam clean your wool carpet. Instead, it is recommended that you use some form of a dry-cleaning method. In this way, the rug will have much faster drying and recovery time.  With a minimum routine maintenance and care, your wool rug or carpet will consistently retain its original color, texture, and overall appearance.
