How Different Types of Carpet Fibers Withstand Wear

Different types of carpet fibers have various levels of durability, but daily use takes a toll on any carpet. In particular, wear is most common in hallways and doorways. While the cost of low-quality fibers can be appealing to homeowners, these options aren’t built to withstand heavy traffic.

When carpeting is manufactured, it’s composed of either natural or synthetic fibers. These fibers are made into yarn and then attached to a backing, using a range of techniques. With so many options on the market, let’s look at how different types of carpet fibers hold up over time…

List of Contents

The Different Carpet Fibers

There are several types of carpet fiber, including nylon 66, nylon 6, polypropylene, which is also known as olefin, wool, and polyester. Nylon is the most commonly used type of yarn in carpeting because it’s sturdy and highly resistant to stains.

Synthetic Fibers

Nylon is a synthetic fiber, as are polyester and polypropylene. These materials are not found in nature. Instead, they’re manufactured with chemical compounds, and they’re usually tested exclusively in labs for their washability, durability, and endurance. These carpet fibers can be produced in a wide range of thicknesses, colors, and textures.

Natural Fibers

Wool is a fiber that’s found in nature- on sheep, of course! Jute, cotton, sisal, and coir are also natural materials. These natural carpet fibers are typically harvested and woven into smaller floor coverings. Wool is the only variation that’s used in wall-to-wall carpeting. It doesn’t have the endurance or stain resistant qualities of nylon; however, some people do prefer its feel and look.

Unfortunately, signs of wear and tear appear sooner on natural carpet fibers. The fibers don’t have a resilient spring-back effect and become soiled more easily. Also, stains are more difficult to remove from wool carpets.

In terms of practicality and cost, synthetic carpet fibers are preferable. They last longer and don’t require the upkeep and cleaning of natural fibers. Actually, the majority of carpet installations use some form of the nylon 66 variety. It’s durable and easy to clean, and won’t require extensive maintenance. Overall, nylon seems to be the winner in terms of lifespan and investment, but natural carpet fibers are a beautiful option too.
